Main / Miscellaneous / Achmea Tower...
The Achmea Tower (/Achmea-toren/) by night. The tower was designed by (A Bonnema http://www.bonnema.com/), and is about 114 meters / 374 feet high. The building exists out of two towers, one small one and one big one. The small one is not visible on the picture because it is located directly behind the big one from this point of view.

When the tower was opened, the neon light at the top was green, but after a while they replaced it with a red one because of the (military air base http://www.luchtmacht.nl/leeuwarden/) that is nearby.

When the first winter arrived in 2002, two of the big concrete plates attached to the side of the building came down and fell to pieces on the pavement and road below, without causing physical damage to people. The attachments of the plates were investigated by (TNO http://www.tno.nl/), and a number of them were reinforced. But in November 2004 another plate came down. This one didn't kill anybody either, and survived the fall. That wasn't the only problem with the tower; In 2003 one of the glass panes on the top floor cracked.
